Paver Patio Project in Ashland, Massachusetts

Project Summary

This Ashland, Massachusetts project replaced a plain backyard with a clean, usable paver patio. What makes it a good one to follow is the base. These photos show the full process, from excavation and a properly compacted base through to the finished patio with its curved front edge. Get the base right and a patio stays level for decades, and that is exactly how this one was built.

From Bare Ground to Finished Paver Patio

Every patio we build starts with what goes underneath it. Our crew excavated the full area behind the house, cleared out the old ground and stone, and dug down to solid, level earth. Getting this depth right is what keeps a patio from sinking or heaving once New England freeze and thaw cycles set in.

Building the Base

Next we brought in crushed stone and built up a deep base, running plate compactors over it in layers until it was rock solid, with the pavers staged nearby ready to lay. This base is the part no one sees in the finished photos, and it is the single biggest reason a patio still looks right ten and twenty years later.

Laying the Pavers

With a level, compacted base in place, our crew laid the pavers piece by piece, working out from the house and shaping the patio as they went. You can start to see the finished footprint take shape here, including the curved front edge.

The Finished Patio

The completed patio gives this Ashland home a clean outdoor space with a curved front edge and a contrasting border that frames the whole surface. It is built entirely in natural stone and pavers, no concrete, so it holds up to Massachusetts winters and ages well over time.

We build patios in natural stone and pavers, not concrete, because they hold up better to New England winters and age well over time. M Coelho Group has been building outdoor spaces across Massachusetts since 2003, and we are licensed and insured in MA.
